Introduction

Neoregelia are a popular houseplant choice for both novice and experienced gardeners alike due to their hardiness and collectibility. Neoregelia are a low-maintenance epiphytic plant in the bromeliaceae family - this means they can be grown epiphytically (on trees) and terrestrially (in soil)! Each different cultivar features different foliage colours and patterns, ranging from browns and greens to vibrant pinks and reds. There's a Neoregelia for every occasion!

Care Guide

Planting. Neoregelia are unique as they can be grown either in or out of soil! They are an epiphytic plant, which means they can be grown on the surface of another plant - like a tree. This however, does not mean they are nutrient-sufficient! Epiphytes only grow on other plants for support and are not parasitic in nature. Therefore, Neoregelia still need to derive their moisture and nutrients from external sources. For the most part, they collect water from the rain and moisture in the air, and exploit the nutrients from organic debri. Giving them a shower with the hose occasionally is never a bad idea though!
When planting your Neoregelia in soil, you want to utilise a potting mix with really good drainage! Neoregelia will rot if left with wet feet. A high-quality succulent mix is a great option if your local garden store doesn't stock a bromeliad specific mix.

Environment. Neoregelia prefer a tropical environment. They derive their water intake from the moisture in the air, so humidity is essential! Most varieties of Neoregelia are also sensitive to the sun and require a nice position in the shade with plenty of bright, indirect light. They can be grown indoors so long as they have access to fresh air and good lighting.

Lighting. Most varieties of Neoregelia come in vibrant colours with unique patterning on their foliage. In order to keep them looking their best, high light is recommended. Keeping them out of direct sunlight is advised, as it can cause burn damage to the foliage. Morning sun is typically okay, but in the hotter parts of Australia we recommend sheltering your Neoregelia from the harsh afternoon rays.

Watering. Neoregelia can be watered in two different ways. When planted on another plant - like a tree - they will utilise the moisture in the air. However, when the humidity is low, your Neoregelia will benefit from a shower under the hose. If your Neoregelia is planted in soil (especially if it is indoors) it will need to be watered regularly via the inner cup of the plant. This can be done by watering from a top-down position with a watering can, or tipping water directly into the plants inner cup. Keep in mind though, you should only water your Neoregelia when the inner cup has dried out!
