Introduction
Cryptanthus, commonly called an ‘Earth Star’ due to its unique star shape, is a terrestrial member of the Bromeliad family. Unlike other Bromeliads, the Cryptanthus needs to be grown in soil – thus it is terrestrial. Earth Stars are ideal as indoor plants as they require bright, indirect light to stay vibrant.

Cryptanthus Colour Variations
Cryptanthus, commonly known as Earth Stars, are prized for their striking foliage patterns and vibrant colour variations. Each variety forms a star-shaped rosette of leaves that can display a wide range of colours and textures.
- Red & Burgundy Forms
These varieties feature deep red to burgundy foliage that forms a bold star-shaped rosette of rich tones that intensify in brighter light. - Green & Bronze Forms
display earthy tones with subtle metallic or copper hues, with faint banding or mottled patterns. - Pink & Coral Forms
produce delicate striping of warm tones ranging from soft blush to vibrant coral shades. - Variegated Forms
feature striking stripes and marbling of cream, yellow, lime, or silver contrasting against darker foliage.

Cryptanthus Form
Cryptanthus form a flat, star-shaped rosette of leaves that spread outward close to the soil surface. The foliage grows in symmetrical layers from a central point, creating the distinctive “Earth Star” appearance the genus is known for. The leaves are typically narrow, slightly wavy, and may have finely serrated edges, giving the plant a textured and ornamental form.
Cryptanthus grow in a clumping or colony-forming habit. After the main plant matures and flowers, it produces offsets (pups) from the base. These pups develop into new rosettes that grow alongside the original plant, gradually forming a dense cluster of star-shaped plants. Over time, a single plant can spread into a compact clump of multiple rosettes, creating a fuller and more impactful display. -
Care For Your Cryptanthus
- Planting. Plant your Earth Star in a well-drained soil that is loose and aptly aerated to prevent root rot. A good quality orchid mix is a great option! Earth Stars are slow growing and will very rarely need to be repotted into a larger pot – however, changing the soil every 4 years is recommended.
- Environment. Keep your Earth Star out of the harsh sun! Earth Stars prefer a nice shady spot as a feature in a rock garden or as a container plant. They are tolerant to a wide range of environmental conditions but should be kept out of the extreme cold (That includes air-conditioning!).
- Lighting. Earth Stars need a lot of bright, indirect light to ensure they keep their vibrant colouring - an indoor position is ideal. If you notice your Earth Star looking a bit pale, consider moving it somewhere with more light. Avoid any direct sunlight as this may burn your Earth Star and cause bleaching.
- Watering. Unlike epiphytic bromeliads, Earth Stars are terrestrial and prefer a more regular watering schedule. These plants like their soil to be kept moist – not wet! Ensure your Earth Star has good drainage to avoid any waterlogging that could lead to rot.
Styling Your Cryptanthus
Cryptanthus are perfect for adding colour and texture when styling your home, patio, or outdoor living spaces. Their compact, star-shaped form makes them ideal for decorative pots, terrariums, or grouped plant displays where their vibrant foliage can really stand out.
Indoor Styling Ideas
Cryptanthus are ideal for styling indoors thanks to their compact size and striking star-shaped foliage. They look beautiful placed in decorative ceramic pots on shelves, coffee tables, or desks where their vibrant colours can stand out. Their low-growing form also makes them perfect for terrariums or small plant arrangements, and they can be grouped with other tropical plants to create a layered indoor display with interesting textures and colour contrasts.
Patio & Outdoor Styling Ideas
Cryptanthus can also be used to add colour and texture to patios, balconies, or shaded outdoor areas. Planted in decorative containers or shallow bowls, they create eye-catching centrepieces for outdoor tables and entertaining spaces. They can also be combined with other tropical plants such as bromeliads or ferns in container gardens, or used as colourful ground-level accents in sheltered garden beds where their bold foliage provides a vibrant feature.
